Aspley NPT - team updates

Dear residents of City West,

This is to update you on some of our team's activities over the last week or so.

Last week I attended Nottingham Magistrates' Court. This was for a case involving a man I arrested earlier in the year for allegedly assaulting his neighbour. The case had been listed for trial, but unfortunately the court double-booked the case, so it was adjourned until October. Unfortunately, this is all too common with police officers being 'warned' to attend court for them only to be told on the day they are either no longer required, or the case being adjourned for another reason.

A week last Friday me and PCSO Pilarek completed several hours of patrol with two youth outreach workers Tremayne and Vallon. They are employed by Nottinghamshire Police and separate to other youth engagement services. We attended numerous addresses of young people in and around the Broxtowe Estate. We also went to Bells Lane Community Centre and 'The Rocks' entrance to Broxtowe Country Park, where we're currently receiving numerous reports of anti-social behaviour. We hope to engage with younger people involved in anti-social behaviour and divert them towards more productive uses of their time.

After rest days, we returned to our early shifts on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. On Tuesday our team attended an address in Aspley to arrest a teenager for an alleged serious assault in Beeston earlier this month. Fortunately for us, he was at home sleeping soundly until our arrival. We transported him to custody despite his histrionics and attempts to delay us by insisting we dress him.

We had two further arrests on Wednesday. We were made aware by social services of two 'children' in a care home, who they had 'age assessed' and found to be adults. We attended and arrested them for immigration offences before handing the matter over to our Home Office colleagues responsible for immigration matters.

Earlier this month I served a formal notice on the tenant of an address in Woodfield Road due to repeated anti-social behaviour linked to off-road bikes. Our team then became aware of the adult son at the property being wanted for failing to attend a court date. We attended the property but the man was not present. However, we had intelligence of him being at another address in Broxtowe, which we attended the next day. He was also sleeping soundly on the downstairs sofa until our arrival and came without fuss.

On Friday, a case I had been investigating was in court, though I wasn't required to attend. This involved a man transporting children on school trips in a 16-seater mini-bus without the correct licence or insurance. The driver has previously answered 'no comment' when I interviewed him earlier in the year. However, on Friday he pled guilty and received eight penalty points on his licence and fined.

Also, on Saturday me and PC Morgan interviewed a woman in her 20s for repeatedly calling the police and ambulance service and making false reports. She is believed to be one of the highest 'service users' of the force and has made hundreds of unnecessary calls. She has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Then, last night our team received reports of a large group of youths attending Bells Lane Community Centre, Amesbury Circus. This was believed to be a result of an invite for a birthday party going viral on social media. Our team spent several hours trying to disperse the crowd after the event was shut down. While trying to disperse the crowd, we were told of one male youth in the crowd with a knife. He initially tried to run, but he tripped and was swiftly detained and searched with a lock knife found in his pocket. He was arrested, interviewed and bailed with a referral to our Youth Justice Service team, which will make a decision on the best outcome.
